Visitors are most likely to remember Miami for it’s fun-filled South Beach or “SoBe,” as the locals call it. South Beach isn’t just beaches, it’s rich history is evident in the Art Deco District which consists of over 800 beautifully preserved buildings dating from the 1930’s. Head to Ocean Drive for the best of the Art Deco hotels. For SoBe’s top nightclubs, make your way to Collins and Washington Avenues, between 5th and 16th streets.
The decorative and architectural style of art deco attracted the world from 1925 through 1940. The South Beach version was tropical deco, which include palms, panthers, flamingos, sunbursts and flowers. Three art deco styles exist in South Beach: traditional, futuristic and mediterranean. In 1976 the Miami Design Preservation League was organized to protect and promote this area.
